Today's world can be chaotic and difficult to manage for adults let alone teens. One of the worst things to experience is watching your child suffer. Children and teens struggle to talk about their mental health struggles and instead, it comes out through their behavior. You start to see them struggle in school, they are acting out, they are rude, they stop hanging out with friends, they struggle with self-harm, etc. The challenge is that when they don't talk about the problems they are experiencing the behavior doesn't make sense and is frustrating. Yet it seems that no matter how hard you try you just can't get them to open up.
Even though your teenager is looking more like an adult much of their brain development is still very childlike. Children's primary method of communication is through behavior and play. They show you what is going on instead of telling you, often because they do not understand what is wrong themselves let alone how to communicate it. The important thing to understand here is that everything they talk about and tell you is important as it is a reflection of who they are and what they are focused on and feel.
Here at Rose Haven Counseling, we understand that each child is different and requires understanding and flexibility in how we approach therapy. Therapy with teens is a balance between listening and action. We meet your child where they are, work on building trust, listen, provide opportunities to express thoughts and feelings through various mediums, share helpful information, and build skills. We seek to create a space for your teen that is comfortable, caring, and a special place just for them.
